Ghana prepares to host US First Lady, Laura Bush

Ghana will host the First Lady of the US Laura Bush for two nights from Sunday during which she will unveil a Textbooks and Learning Materials Programme in Accra.

She will also visit Ghana’s biggest teaching hospital, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where she is expected to visit people living with HIV/AIDS.

Mrs Bush is scheduled to arrive here on Sunday afternoon and fly to Liberia on Monday morning for the inauguration of Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, would return to the Ghanaian capital later in the afternoon.

Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf will make history by becoming the first woman head of state in Liberia and in Africa on Monday.

On Tuesday, Mrs Bush will meet Ghana’s President John Agyekum Kufuor on before leaving. She is also expected to visit Nigeria.

The Textbooks and Learning materials Programme links minority serving colleges in the US with institutions in Africa to provide textbooks and school supplies for students on the continent. Laura Bush will deliver a speech on “Teacher training and education”.

She will be accompanied on the Ghana visit by six university presidents from the United States.
