Nigeria beat visiting South Africa 2-0 in their opening qualifier for the 2010 World Cup and the African Nations Cup in the capital city of Abuja Sunday.

A goal by Ikechukwu Uche in the 10th minute and Obinna Nwaneri in the 45th sealed the group 4 match for the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

It was the first time Nigerian skipper Nwankwo Kanu was playing at home since helping his English premiership side Portmouth to win its first FA cup in 69 years 18 May, and the adoring fans hailed him every time he touched the ball.

Nigeria match commentators noted that there was no hostility toward the South Africa players from the Nigerian fans, despite the attacks on Nigerian nationals and other African migrants living in South Africa by xenophobic gangs.
