Mauritanian police arrested a young man , Ali Sarr, presumed to be in his twenties and suspected of committing a series of rapes and murders, Monday evening in the Arafat district of the capital, Nouakchott.
The young man, suspected of at least, two rapes and murders at the Tevragh-Zeina residential area, in Nouakchott, is presently in police custody undergoing questioning.
Ali Sarr was caught with the help of a local mobile phone company which helped to locate his movements by virtue of a mobile phone chip he had taken from one of his victims, confirmed police sources.
The suspect is believed to have used a rather unusual method : killing his victims before sexually abusing them and then robbing them of their personal effects.
In the past few weeks, three young women, all in their early twenties, have been raped and murdered. The police have linked two of these acts directly to the suspect. All three crimes were committed at construction sites in Nouakchott.
Ali Sarr is undergoing questioning alongside another man suspected of being his accomplice, while the police continues to comb through the city for other suspects.
