The Super Falcons of Nigerian who until now were known as the African football queens for winning every continental female football tournament have been dethroned by the queens of Equatorial Guinea.

The seemingly unbeatable falcons lost 1-0 to hosts Equatorial Guinea in the semi-finals of the African Women’s Championship and were denied a place in the finals and a chance to defend their dynasty.

It has been reported however that the Super Nigerian falcons had struggled throughout the tournament only securing their place in the last four with a 2-1 win over South Africa in their final group match.

They drew their opening game with arch rivals Ghana and that was followed by a goalless stalemate against Tunisia.

Their undoing goal in the game against Equatorial Guinea came in the second half after Super Falcons’ goalkeeper Precious Dede failed to deal with a free kick.

Many critics have blamed age, some have blamed the management, and some have blamed the complacency of the falcons.

Now whether or not blames must be appointed, the falcons of Nigeria and the African queens of football have given up their crowns for South Africa’s Banyana Banyana who beat Cameroon 3-0 to go through to the final and the queens of Equatorial Guinea to fight for.

The Falcons will fight for the right to wear the bronze ornaments against Cameroon in the 3rd place match.
