The nominations for the Glo-CAF African Footballer of the Year Award have come down to three names. Togo’s Adebayor Emmanuel, Egypt’s Aboutrika Mohammed, and Ghana’s Michael Essien.

Historically, the Glo-CAF awards has been dominated by Europe-based players and has gone to an African-based player only once. The first and last African-based player to have crossed the finish line to win the award was Emmanuel Amunike of Nigeria in 1994, when he was playing for Egyptian team, Zamalek.

However, the talented striker, Aboutrika Mohamed of Egypt’s AL ALY has made a serious comeback on this year’s final list after he was dropped off from the final list of three last year.

This puts Africa’s Champions League gurus, Al Aly, in yet another prestigious light.

Emanuel Adebayor of Arsenal, already crowned BBC Africa Footballer of the Year, and Chelsea’s Michael Essien, have made the top five in the last three editions and a top three in the last four editions of the Glo-CAF Awards, respectively.

The ceremonies of the Glo-CAF Awards are slated for February 10 and will hold at the Eko Hotels and Suites on Victoria Island in Lagos, Nigeria.
