Why: African Americans have almost twice the risk of stroke compared to Caucasians. Blacks 34 to 54 years old have four times the relative risk for stroke. More than 100,000 African Americans have a stroke every year, largely due to risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, family history and previous stroke or heart attack. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States and a leading cause of severe, long-term disability. By joining Power To End Stroke, the association’s cause campaign that is reaching African Americans with stroke information and tools, African Americans realize that they are the power to end stroke and their passion for the cause helps countless others reduce their risk of stroke and live longer, healthier lives.
