The Indomitable Lions assured themselves a place in South Africa 2010 World Cup with a 2-0 win over the Atlas Lions of Morocco in Fez, On Saturday, November 14.
Real Mallorca striker, Kuamo Webo’s spectacular 18 minute score and another goal handed by three time CAF Player of the Year Samuel Étoo just moments into the second half, gave Cameroon the needed impetus for them to dominate the game to the end.
Cunning performance
The Cameroonian exploit was made possible by the cunning performance of their captain and central defender, Rigobert Song. Standing out with a wonderfull physique, outstanding game reading and intelligence, winning almost all aerial balls in the Cameroon defence, he left the Moroccan side wanting.
The 33 year-old Trabzonspor player in the Turkish league put up spirited tackles and displayed all the best qualities expected of a team captain. He has been part of the national team of Cameroon since the 1990 Italia World Cup and seeing him put up such a wonderful performance, while leading Cameroon to yet its 6th World Cup appearance was all the more impressive given his age.
With the whole Cameroonian defense under his expert control — Geremi (with Newcastle in the premier league) on the right flank and Benoit Ekoto (currently with Tottenham Hot Spurs) on the left flank, — the Indomitable lions ably sailed through.
On the offensive
The compact middle field of Alexandre Song (who plays with Arsenal) and Jean Makoun (with Olympique Lyonnais) could not go unnoticed as they intercepted almost all balls, distributed great passes to the likes of Achilles Emana and Samuel Étoo, and kept on the offensive to the very last minute of the game.
The Indomitable Lions have thus joined South Africa, Ghana, Côte d’Ivore and Nigeria as Africa zone’s representatives with the Pharoahs of Egypt and the Algerian Greens left with yet another fight in Khartoum on the 18th of November to see who goes through.
