Panafrica - Kenya
The first Parliamentary session of the year opened Tuesday morning in Nairobi in a very tense atmosphere. A high number of police force was deployed in the capital and its surroundings to prevent eventual clashes between rival political groups, those belonging to the controversial winner of the general elections on one hand and those belonging to the opposition on the other. This is the the reason behind Kofi Annan’s pending visit, aiming to bring about negotiations between the two parties. - Tuesday 15 January 2008

Panafrica - Ghana

The number of participating countries in the African Cup of Nations has come a long way. Its humble begining in 1957, which took place in Sudan, was marked by only four participating countries, including; Sudan, Egypt, Ethiopia and South Africa.

Here is the full list of recently announced country squads participating the 26th African Cup of Nations which takes place in Accra between the 20th of January and the 10th of February.

Niger - United Kingdom

A landmine that exploded under a car in the Nigerien capital Niamey on 8 January killed one civilian and wounded another, agencies report.

According to the BBC, the explosion occurred in the Yantala district of the city where many top army officers live. The Niamey explosion marks the first time an 11-month-old campaign of steadily escalating violence in the remote north of the country has reached the capital.
