The Appeals Chamber of the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda today rendered two judgements; affirming Simon Bikindi’s conviction and sentence of 15 years in prison and reversing a number of convictions of Simèon Nchamihigo and reducing his sentence to 40 years instead of imprisonment for the remainder of his life. - Thursday 18 March 2010

Botswana - International
International Monetary Fund (IMF) statistical experts are working with officials of the Bank of Botswana (BOB) and of the Nonbank Financial Regulatory Agency (NBFIRA) to improve the breadth and quality of data collected from the financial industry. The cooperative effort is part of an ongoing IMF technical assistance program and responds to calls by international groups, including the G-20, for improved data standards worldwide to support more robust macroeconomic and financial surveillance in the light of the global financial crisis. - Thursday 18 March 2010

U.S. Ambassador to Burundi Pamela J. H. Slutz; Mayor of Bujumbura Mr. Evrard Giswaswa; and Acting Managing Director for Operations of the Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations John Finnegan, Jr. broke ground on the Bujumbura New Embassy Compound (NEC) in Burundi today. - Thursday 18 March 2010

An International Monetary Fund (IMF) staff mission led by Mr. Christian Josz visited the Republic of Chad during March 4-17, 2010 to conduct discussions for the 2010 Article IV Consultation and to hold discussions on a possible Staff Monitored Program for Chad. The mission held constructive discussions with Prime Minister Emmanuel Nadingar, Finance Minister Gata Ngoulou, Infrastructure Minister Adoum Younousmi, and other senior officials. The mission also met representatives of the private sector, trade unions, civil society, and the donor community. - Thursday 18 March 2010

The Meeting on the African Governance Architecture which was being held in Banjul, The Gambia, from the 15th of March, ended today with the participants adopting report and the framework on the African Governance Architecture. Panafrica - United States
Last night the Senate passed S. 1789, The Fair Sentencing Act of 2010, concerning the racially discriminatory disparity in the treatment of the crack and powder forms of cocaine. Although the Senate passed legislation concerning the crack/powder sentencing disparity, it refused to completely eliminate that unjustified disparity. The Senate’s failure is deeply troubling. If left uncorrected, the Senate’s action would mean that racial discrimination will persist. - Thursday 18 March 2010
