The Government of Ethiopia has approved the lease of 22,000 hectares of land to the National Bank of Egypt (NBE), which intends to invest up to 80 million dollars in agriculture in the eastern African country. - Friday 2 April 2010


Panafrica - Tanzania - United States
The U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation has provided support for saving three mosques in Tanzania, including the one near Kizimkazi on the island of Zanzibar that is considered one of the oldest Islamic buildings on the coast of east Africa. The 2008 grant allowed for repairs and restoration of the mosque’s roof, ceiling, doors and windows as well as the mihrab, the ornate alcove that indicates the direction of Mecca. - Friday 2 April 2010


Guinea-Bissau
Civil unrest in Guniea-Bissau has intensified as rebellion leader threatens to kill kidnapped prime minister, while the army chief remains in detention in what has been described as a coup attempt. Portugal and France have immediately condemned the military juntas, calling for a return to constitutional order in the country. - Friday 2 April 2010

Nigeria, Egypt, Algeria, Morocco and South Africa lead the list of African countries that made the most illegal financial transfers between 1970 and 2008. According to a study by the Global Financial Integrity (GFI), published last Friday, more than 854 billion dollars have been fraudulently transferred from Africa. It is twice the amount of public investment allocated to development aid. - Thursday 1 April 2010


Kenya - International
The FIDH and its member organisation, the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC), welcome the decision rendered yesterday by the judges of Pre-Trial Chamber II of the International Criminal Court (ICC) authorising the Prosecutor to open an investigation into the crimes committed during the 2007/2008 post-election violence in Kenya. Given the issues at stake and the fact that threats to key witnesses have already been registered, FIDH and KHRC urge all actors involved to reinforce efforts directed at strengthening protection of victims and witnesses. In addition, FIDH and KHRC call upon the ICC Prosecutor to consider using his propio motu powers in other situations where intervention of the Court might be needed. - Thursday 1 April 2010


Liberia - Libya - Nigeria
Liberia’s President Ms. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has moved to broker peace between Nigeria and Libya following a strain in diplomatic relations after Libyan Leader Muammar Gaddafi advised Nigeria to split- first on religious lines before he suggested a split on ethnic lines. Nigeria withdrew its ambassador from Tripoli in disapproval. - Thursday 1 April 2010


Panafrica - Ghana - United States
Angelou, the renowned American writer and poet, spoke of the enslavement and mistreatment of Africans during the colonial and early statehood periods of present-day New York City during a special ceremony at a site that became the African Burial Ground National Monument. Her words now hang on the rafters of a new visitor center at the monument in downtown New York. Opened in February, the center presents a panorama of black people’s lives on Manhattan Island, the original settlement of New York City, in the 17th and 18th centuries. - Thursday 1 April 2010

The Arab Reform Initiative (ARI) Monday presented its report, on the development of the democratic transition in ten Arab countries for the year 2008, in Paris. Applying strict international and Arab criteria as well as a "no strings attached" principle vis-a-vis donations, it is the result of works undertaken by local institutions. - Thursday 1 April 2010
