Eddie Murphy will be the first recipient of the Comedy Icon Award at the first annual The Comedy Awards, scheduled to air Sunday, April 10 on multiple MTV Networks channels.

The honor will be given yearly to a modern icon, an individual who has contributed to comedy and whose impact has changed the landscape and inspired future generations of entertainers. Murphy will be recognized for his stand-up, sketch, film and TV work.

Japan

Japan may need up to five years to rebuild from the disastrous earthquake and tsunami that has caused up to $235bn (£145bn) of damage, the World Bank said in a report.

It also estimates that 0.5 percentage points will be shaved from the country’s economic growth this year.

Apple has filed a lawsuit against Amazon accusing the Web retail giant of copyright infringement over the name "app store."

The complaint, filed Friday, is over the name of Amazon’s new store for mobile phone applications: It’s called "Amazon Appstore."

Amazon.com is entering the mobile app business with an Android app store that will open Tuesday.

The Amazon Appstore, accessible at Amazon.com/appstore and through a mobile app, will sell applications for Android phones and tablets. It will also encroach on Google’s territory by providing Android users with a new way to buy apps that cuts Google out of the equation.

Hip-hop singer Wyclef Jean was recovering Sunday after he was shot in the hand, his publicist said.

Spokeswoman Cindy Tanenbaum said Jean, who was in Haiti, was shot in Port-au-Prince on Saturday — on the eve of the country’s presidential runoff vote.
