A group of civil society NGOs, meeting in Dakar ahead of the 11th summit of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC), has urged the Pan-Islamic organisation to “recognise the sub-regional character of the Darfur conflict” and to end the impunity and lawlessness in Sudan’s western province.
In a joint declaration, Monday, the NGOs also called on participants at the Dakar summit to sign a “genuine” accord, along with a full implementation plan that can guarantee the conditions for a fair and lasting peace between Chad and Sudan.
They appealed to the heads of state and government expected at the summit “to remind the Sudanese government of its obligations towards the Muslim people in Darfur”, and to make additional moves to persuade Khartoum to implement them as part of the OIC Charter, the Cairo Declaration on human rights in Islam and other relevant regional and international legal instruments on human rights to which Sudan is a signatory.
The NGOs that signed the declaration included the African Assembly for the Defence of Human Rights (RADDO), the Coalition The Darfur Consortium, the National Human Rights Organisation, Waripnet, Amnesty International Senegal and the Darfur Leaders Network.
Meanwhile, RADDO Secretary General Alioune Tine has decried the rising ‘Islamophobia’ in several regions of the world, mainly in the West, while also condemning the various anti-Muslim and anti-Islamic incidents as well as the upsurge of fanaticism and intolerance.
