The Polisario Front urged international opinion to take the claims “made by a people sure of their right” into account. This statement was made in the framework of the the proposed referendum for self-determination in Western Sahara.
The representative of the Sahraoui people, who “regrets” that the Security Council did not explicitly call for a respect of human rights in Western Sahara exposed the violations of its territory to international forums.
The polisario front asserted that a “large majority of Council members including the Secretary General (UN) and international NGOs had reported massive violations of these rights and other acts of repression by the occupying forces in the Moroccan occupied territories “.
The Security Council, taking note of the report of the Secretary General (UN), which indicated that “the consolidation of confusion is not an acceptable outcome for the negotiating process in progress,” was also concerned with the issue of the Sahraouis’ resolve to defend their right for self determination.
Morocco and the Polisario Front have already met together in four rounds of direct talks at Manhasset in New York under the auspices of the United Nations without registering any progress. The objective of these negotiations is to achieve a lasting and mutually acceptable political solution.
Reacting to the Security Council’s resolution, which calls on both conflicting parties to “engage more vigorously in substantial negotiations”, the Polisario Front, Wednesday, welcomed “the fact that the Security Council has once again decided to consolidate and devote international legality to the Western Sahara issue.
Meanwhile the Security Council has reiterated its willingness to help the two parties to reach their a concensus. They were also urged to continue to show political willingness and work in an atmosphere favorable to the dialogue.
