Ghana’s ruling centre- right New Patriotic Party (NPP) has named a 44-year-old banker, Dr Muhamadu Bawumia as the running-mate of Nana Akufo -Addo for the December 7 presidential election.

However, the choice immediately ran into difficulties when party supporters who thronged the Alisa Hotel in Accra where the National Executive Committee was meeting, protested saying he is unknown in the party.

Bawumia, the deputy governor of Bank of Ghana who is from the north, was a surprise choice as his name had hardly featured among front runners until this week.

A statement issued by Nana Ohene Ntow, general secretary of the party, said in a statement shortly before midnight GMT, that Akufo-Addo presented his nominee to the Committee, which approved it.

He will be presented to party supporters at their national delegates’ conference at Takoradi in the west of the country on Saturday. Panapress.
