A former governor of Nigeria’s northern Kebbi state, Adamu Aliero, has been charged to court over a contract for the supply of 9,422 chickens at the cost of 11.7 million naira (about US$100,000) to schools in the state while he was in office.
The anti-graft Independent and Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) said it decided to investigate the allegation after receiving a petition that Aliero, who is now a serving Senator, awarded the chicken supply contract indirectly to his farm in 2005.
ICPC said the contract was awarded to a company, P.P Madus Nigeria Ltd, that ended up paying 6.6 million naira (US$60,000) to Aliero’s account for the supply of the chicken from his Labana Farm.
The company, which merely acted as a middleman, was not registered with the state’s tenders board.
ICPC and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have said they are probing many former state governors over corruption charges.
The EFCC has already charged some of them to court.
Under the Nigerian constitution, state governors are immuned from prosecution while in office.
