The number of Kenyans so far charged with being involved in the July 11th 2011 bomb blasts in Kampala in which over 70 people died has today risen from 14 to 16 after 2 more were charged in Nakawa magistrate’s court in Uganda.
Those charged today include 49 year old Al-Amin Kimathi and 37 year old Omar Awadh. Al-Amin Kimathi is reportedly a human rights activist in Kenya.
Early September, Kenyan security agencies arrested a journalist, Habib Suleiman, in the coastal city of Mombasa suspected to have been involved in the July 11 twin bomb blasts in Kampala.
According to the prosecution, the two Kenyans face 89 offenses which include terrorism, murder and attempted murder.
Nakawa court chief magistrate Deo Ssejjemba remanded the two Kenyans to Luzira maximum prison up to October 8th, 2010.
On July 11th 2010, two bomb blasts killed over 70 peolpe who were watching the finals of world cup at two places in Kampala.
Security personnel in Uganda with help of FBI identified the two suicide bombers as one being a Somali and the other a Kenyan. Somali Islamist group al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the bloody acts.
Police in Uganda swung into action and so far has arrested over 80 suspects. However, only 38 have been charged in courts of law while while others were either released after interrogations or are still being held by police.
