Milk is a very rich environment, one that favors the growth of microorganisms. It is therefore very important to take great care when looking after baby bottles and teats.

If your baby has finished his bottle but you don’t have time to wash it properly straightaway, start by giving the bottle and teat a rinse in warm water. Later, when you are doing the washing up, wash the bottle with washing up liquid and a bottle brush. And don’t forget to rinse it carefully to remove all trace of the washing liquid. Bottle brushes must also be cleaned after each use to ensure that no milk particles are left behind.

To avoid the proliferation of germs and bacteria that could infect your child, sterilize bottles and teats occasionally. There are several different methods you can use. The most common is to boil all bottles and accessories. You can immerse the equipment in boiling water for around twenty minutes. Another option is to use an electric or steam sterilizer. Whatever method you use, always remember to drain the bottles thoroughly to avoid the risk of stagnant water.

If you’re away from home or unable to boil water, you can always disinfect baby equipment via the cold sterilization method. This method uses effervescent, chlorine-based tablets. These are dissolved in a container of cold water and will sterilize your equipment within thirty minutes.
