Opposition in Uganda has warned president President Yoweri Museveni against copying embattled Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo by refusing to handover power if he loses next month’s elections.
Addressing journalists in Kampala, the leader of Democratic Party (DP), Nobert Mao, who is also contesting for presidency, said ”Museveni should not act like Gbagbo who lost the presidential polls to opposition candidate Alassane Ouattara but refused to leave state power. If he does so, we will use force to remove him from state house.”
Laurent Gbagbo has refused to hand over power to his opponent Alassane Quattara who beat him in the recent presidential elections in Ivory Coast which has led to chaos in the country.
Norbert Mao said that they are not worried that President Museveni might refuse to handover power if he loses elections, adding that the opposition will pressurize him to get out.
But the spokesman of Uganda ruling party, National Resistance Movement (NRM), Ofwono Opondo has said that Museveni can not cling on power won by one of his opponents.
”First of all, Museveni is to win the elections. He therefore can not cling to power when he is assured of winning,” Opondo said.
Two opinion polls have so far revealed that Museveni will win the forthcoming elections with over 60 per cent of the votes.
