Prime Minister Morgan Tsangirai, Saturday, attends Robert Mugabe’s lavish birthday party in Chinhoyi in a backdrop of famine and health crisis. Mugabe turned 85 last week.

Mugabe extended an invitation to the hard core enemy and this has angered many within MDC. Prime Minister has not attended the event since the formation of MDC in 1999.

Yesterday afternoon the MDC national executive met in Harare and expressed satisfaction with the operations of the inclusive Government, following a report tabled at the party’s ordinary session by party president Tsvangirai.

Supporters of Mugabe have raised more than 250,000 US dollars for lavish birthday celebration.

Fundraising for the party comes as Mugabe’s long-time rival, Prime Minister Tsvangirai, tries to raise five billion dollars in aid and investment to rebuild schools, hospitals and sewers after a decade of economic collapse.

“Now all is set for the event and we expect thousands of people to throng the venue and celebrate with us,” committee treasurer Themba Mliswa was quoted as saying.

The weekend celebration comes after he and Tsvangirai formed a unity government this month in hopes of ending nearly a year of political turmoil that followed controversial elections.

Tsvangirai plans to attend the celebration, which he derided last year as “a gathering of the satisfied few” in a nation crippled by food shortages.
