When the McCain campaign released his latest in a string of sharply negative advertisements, mocking Barack Obama as a self-important celebrity along the likes of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, all that was expected was the usual comments from critics. In fact, little did they think of anything close to an intelligent riposte making mockery of their star candidate. And little did critics think that their warning of a backfire would be confirmed with a brilliant riposte from Paris Hilton, not Barack Obama.

Obama campaign’s immediate response following McCain’s ad was; “On a day when major news organizations across the country are taking Senator McCain to task for a steady stream of false, negative attacks, his campaign has launched yet another … Or, as some might say, ‘Oops! He did it again.’” While Obama himself responded: “You know, I don’t pay attention to John McCain’s ads, although I do notice he doesn’t seem to have anything to say very positive about himself. He seems to only be talking about me… You need to ask John McCain what he’s for and not just what he’s against.”

Luxuriating in a pool chair and clad in a leopard skin swim suit while flipping through the pages of travel magazine, Hilton – whose parents regret for contributing maximum sums to the McCain campaign — introduces herself and further attacks “that wrinkly, white-haired guy” who used her in his campaign ad. Hilton says she figures that means she’s running for president, too.

Thanking the “white haired dude” [John McCain] for endorsing her as a presidential candidate, she talks about what he had failed to talk about in his ad ; her energy policy.
