The Kenya Police have confirmed that a Police officer shot and killed an opposition Member of Parliament in the Western town of Eldoret, the heart of post-election violence in Kenya that followed the disputed presiden t ial elections.

“I wish to bring to the attention of the public a very distressing and unfortunate incident that occurred in Eldoret this morning,” Police Spokesman Eric Kirait h e said. “At about 10.15 hrs this morning, Hon. David Kimutai Too, who is the MP for Ainamoi and Police Constable Eunice Chepkwony of the Kenya Police attached to Traffic Eldoret were both shot by Police Constable Andrew Moache also of Eldoret at Wes t Indies Hotel in Eldoret,” he said.

Unfortunately, Hon. David Kimutai Too died and Constable Chepkwony is in critical condition in the hospital.

Police Constable Andrew Moache was arrested at Turbo as he attempted to flee and will be transferred to Nakuru.

He will be arraigned Friday for murder of the honourable MP.

“I am reliably informed that Constable Eunice Chepkwony was the girl-friend of C onstable Andrew Moache and we are therefore treating it as a crime of passion. However, the matter will be decided in court,” he said.

“Following this unfortunate incident, I urge people to remain calm and await the law to take its course in view of the arrest of the suspect. It would be wrong for anyone, including politicians, to speculate or politicize this unfortunate i n cident or in anyway incite the public,” the Police Spokesman said.

Kimutai is the second opposition MP to be killed this week. He is a member of the Opposition Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) that has been contesting Preside n t Mwai Kibaki’s re-election.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon has announced plans to travel to Kenya to lend moral support for the political mediation process led by former UN Secretary-Gen e ral Kofi Annan.
