Reports from the AU summit which begun on Thursday in the Ethiopian Capital, Addis Ababa, have described the encouraging reactions from both president Thabo Mbeki and Muammar Kadhafi.

Whilst Thabo Mbeki lauds the advancement of the Union Government, Muammar Kadhafi is very positive with the general conduct of the African Union summit.

The Libyan Foreign Minister, who is taking part in the summit, Dr. Ali Triki Triki said, Tuesday, in Addis Ababa, that the UN should consider giving Africa two permanent seats on the UN Security Council as well as five non-permanent seats. The two seats he said should come with all the trappings of permanent seats including veto power, just like what is enjoyed by those with permanent seats. He also said that the AU would negotiate for the seats on the grounds that AU was committed to the Sirte, Libya, UN system reform of July 2005.

Mr. Kadhafi, had warned earlier on, Tuesday, that Libya could redirect its investments to the Mediterranean region if the continent engaged in a racist policy or if it decided to neglect its future. He said that the Libyan Company by name of Africa For Investments had injected between $5 and $10 million while the Libyan Oil sector had invested about $750 million in African countries.

In matters concerning the unrest in Kenya, Mr. Oumar Konare, the AU chairman has made it clear that the African Union does not intend to sit back with its arms folded and not doing anything. He said “if Kenya burns there will be nothing for tomorrow.” He called on Kenyans to stop the violence saying that Kenya was the continent’s hope.
The talks to stop the unrest in Kenya spear headed by Kofi Annan, former UN secretary general has so far seen a breakthrough.

The main agenda on the AU summit, though, still remains industrialisation.
