Mizengo Pinda has been appointed as the new Prime Minister of Tanzania by President Jakaya Kikwete to replace Edward Lowassa who resigned Thursday evening.

Pinda’s nomination had been approved on Friday evening by a vast majority of the Parliament in Dodoma, in the centre of the country in a parliamentary session broadcast live both on television and radio.

The 59 year old Prime Minister was the secretary of state for regional affairs and local administration in Lowassa’s cabinet.

The outgoing Prime Minister announced his resignation on Thursday after he was cited in a corruption case.

According to a report presented at the parliament, a contract for the provision of electricity signed between the government and Richmond, an american company, had been interfered with during its bid, by Lowassa and other government representatives, in favour of the american company.

This resignation precedes a visit from the American President, George W. Bush, who is expected next week. He is also expected in the neighbouring Rwanda, during his final visit to Africa.

The governor of the Tanzanian Central Bank had been dismissed by President Kikwete following an audit that showed misappropriation of reimbursement operations of Tanzania’s external debts.
