The Black Stars of Ghana ended their 2008 Africa Cup of Nations campaign Saturday with a third place finish, after rallying to beat the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire 4-2 in the third-place match in Kumasi.

It was a consolation victory for the Ghanaians, whose mantra before the start of the competition was ”host and win”.

Ghana had hoped to clinch its fifth Nations Cup title and equal the record of five wins held by the Pharaohs of Egypt.

But that was not to be as Cameroon muscled the hosts out of contention for the title, after a hard-fought 1-0 victory in the semi-final.

Scorers in the third-place match:

Ghana: 4 (10th, Muntari; 70th Owusu; 80th Agogo; 84th Draman)

Cote d’Ivoire: 2 (24th, 32nd Sanogo)

The Highest Goal Scoring CAN ever

Meanwhile, the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations tournament Saturday erased the all-time record for the number of goals scored at a single Nations Cup tournament, after the goal tally reached 98.

The tally increased from 92 to 98, after the third-place match between Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire in Kumasi produced six goals (4-2 in favour of Ghana).

The previous record of 93 goals was held by the 1998 tournament in Burkina Faso.

Cameroon’s Samuel Eto’o has already eclipsed the long-standing record of 14 individual, all-time goals scored at the Nations Cup, held by Ivorian Laurent Pokou.

CAN 2008  Teams representing 47 countries are split into 12 groups of four. The best team from each group automatically qualifies to take part in the 26th edition of the African Cup of Nations football competition which takes place in Ghana.
