Great lakes region hold talks on good governance

A delegation from the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) is in the Zambian capital, Lusaka, for a meeting on the implementation of the protocol on democracy and good governance.

The team, led by ICGLR executive secretary, Ambassador Liberata Mulamula, arrived Sunday and will attend a five-day workshop on good governance and democracy.

The delegation comprises delegates from the 11 member countries of the GLR, civil society organisations, the United Nations Development Programme, human rights bodies and members of Parliament.

Mulamula disclosed that the workshop would discuss the pact on peace, stability and development in the GLR and how it would be implemented, although democracy and good governance formed the pillar of the workshop.

The workshop will also discuss the establishment of a centre on democracy, human rights and good governance, rule of law, fight against crimes on humanity and human rights, protocol on democracy and good governance, protocol on judicial cooperation as well as the protocol on prevention and punishment of the crime of genocide and war crimes.
