Nigeria President Yar’Adua’s chief of staff resigns

Nigeria’s President Umaru Yar’Adua has accepted the resignation of his Chief of Staff, retired Maj.-Gen. Abdullahi Mohammed, the presidency said in a statement Thursday.

In accepting Gen. Mohammed’s resignation, President Yar’Adua praised his immense patriotism and dedication to national service.

The President thanked Gen. Mohammed for his enormous contributions to the present administration in the past year, and to national development in the course of a remarkable public service career spanning many decades within and outside the Armed Forces.

The resignation will take effect 2 June, 2008.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President (Political), Dr. Gbolade Osinowo, is to act as Chief of Staff until the appointment of a substantive replacement for Gen. Mohammed.

News of the resignation coincides with the first anniversary of the Yar’Adua administration.

Gen. Mohammed served as Chief of Staff to former President Olusegun Obasanjo and was re-appointed by President Yar’Adua when he took over from Obasanjo. Panapress .
