African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson Jean Ping has expressed his satisfaction with the conduct of the first round of the presidential poll on the autonomous Island of Anjouan and underlined the promotion of security throughout the electoral process.
Noting that the process, which kicked off on 15 June 2008, was characterised by calm and discipline, Ping has also congratulated the Anjouanese people “for their maturity during the entire period of the electoral campaign.”
In a statement issued here Wednesday, the AU chief executive commended the Comorian National Army, supported by the AU Electoral and Security Assistance Mission to the Comoros (MAES), for maintaining security for the electoral process.
At the same time, Ping paid tribute to bilateral and multilateral partners for their financial support to Comorian authorities in conducting the first round of the election and appealed for their continued assistance until the successful completion of the process.
On its part, he said, the AU would back the process in line with the pertinent decisions of its Peace and Security Council, and work closely with the international community to consolidate the progress made so far. Panapress .
