The Secretary General of the International Francophonie Organisation (OIF), Abdou Diouf, on Thursday congratulated French writer Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio, for winning the 2008 Nobel Prize for Literature.

The Secretary General of the International Francophonie Organisation (OIF), Abdou Diouf, on Thursday congratulated French writer Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio, for winning the 2008 Nobel Prize for Literature.

In a communiqué published in Paris, Mr Diouf said the winner was honoured for “his richness and originality”.

“I am all the more proud of the jury’s choice as commitment in favour of the French language, which binds us all …,” he wrote.

The most prestigious literary distinction was awarded on Thursday to Le Clézio, 68, for his book “which marks a departure,” according to the Swedish Academy, which awards the Nobel prizes.

The French writer, author of about 50 novels and poetic texts, will receive his prize of a cheque of 1.2 million euros on 10 December in Stockholm.
