Nigeria rakes in MTV African Awards

The Just concluded MTV African Music Awards saw Nigerian artists dominate the winner list. 11 Awards were given out on the night and 6 of them were won by Nigerian entertainers.

The Just concluded MTV African Music Awards saw Nigerian artists dominate the winner list. 11 Awards were given out on the night and 6 of them were won by Nigerian entertainers.

The award which as held in the beautifully designed Velodrome in Abuja, Nigeria was hosted by Britain’s Trevor Nelson in front of a crowd of 5,000 fans.

The winners included D’banj who won both the artist of the year award and the best male award, fellow Nigerian rapper Naeto C who won best new act, while 9ice of Nigeria won the best Hip-hop. Nigerian duo P-Square, won the prize for best group award.

Kenyan singer Wahu, was named best female and South Africa hip-hoppers Jozi won the award for the best live performers. The legend gong went to the late Fela Kuti, the Nigerian pioneer of Afrobeat. The award was received by his children, Yemi and Seun Kuti.

There was also a tribute to “Mama Africa” Miriam Makeba, the South African singer who died just over a week ago.

According to reports, there was live performance by US rapper The Game, Flo-rida, and Kelly Rowland. Other live acts included Seun Kuti, 9ice, as well as HHP from South Africa.

HHP came back on stage to join Nigerian singing sensation Asa on her song Jailer, and Rowland performed alongside D’banj.

But the biggest collaboation was that of South African rockers Cassette, Kenyan rapper Jua Cali, and Nigerian Ikechukwu and Naeto C.
