Press statement by Mr Djibrill Bassole, Joint au-un chief mediator for Darfur

I have just had a meeting with the First Vice President of the Republic of the Sudan, H.E. Salva Kiir Mayardit, about the state and progress of the Darfur peace talks.

The negotiations in Doha are advancing well. It is an inclusive process in which civil society representatives, including internally displaced people and refugees, are participating actively and constructively.

However, the absence of both the Justice and Equality Movement and Sudan Liberation Movement of Abdel Wahid at the negotiation table and the on-going fighting in Darfur are putting at risk the chances for a definitive and stable peace.

This is why I have encouraged First Vice President Kiir to pursue, with the Mediation, efforts to persuade Khalil Ibrahim and Abdel Wahid Al Nour to engage in peace talks with the Government of National Unity of the Sudan in Doha.

During my meeting with First Vice President Kiir, I stressed that it is imperative that the Government and the JEM conclude a cease-fire, both for improving the immediate security situation in Darfur and for consolidating peace and stability in the Sudan as a whole.
