“I am gravely concerned about the escalating situation in Cote d’Ivoire and mourn the mounting loss of life.

I join the many, led by the Economic Community of West African States and the African Union, who call on former President Laurent Gbagbo to step aside and respect the will of the people. They have chosen Alassane Ouattara and no repression, however brutal and long, can undo this decision nor Mr. Ouattara’s legitimacy. The international community has accepted Mr. Ouattara’s victory and encourages him in his quest to bring peace and reconciliation to Cote d’Ivoire.

I urge Mr. Ouattara and Mr. Gbagbo to excercise restraint and avoid any acts that will lead to further confrontation. I call on the military and police forces of Cote d’Ivoire to protect the civilian population, avoid excessive use of force and refrain from any activities that put more lives at risk. I also call on them to cease any action aimed at hindering the peaceful and essential work of the United Nations. Soldiers and police must remember their sacred duty to serve and protect the people of Cote d’Ivoire and turn away from those who illigitimately cling to power at the cost of peace and progress. Let me assure you that those who defy the will of the people and order or commit acts of violence will have to answer for their deeds and be held accountable.

I am proud of the many people in Cote d’Ivoire who are standing up against the current injustice and repression. They can take comfort in the fact that the entire world stands by them.

Finally, I appeal to all Ivoiriens to reject manipulation of tribal differences and work together for peace, stability, reconciliation and to demand the rule of law and respect for human rights.”

Kofi A. Annan

Former United Nations Secretary-General (1997-2006)
