French tour operators have decided to maintain their travel schedule for Mauritania, despite warnings from the French government, the state-run daily “Horizon” reported here, quoting a statement from the operators.
Charter company Point Afrique Voyages and 17 partner tour operators
“have decided…to maintain the Mauritanian destination, but to leave the choice to all their customers,” the report said. Last week, the French Government strongly advised its nationals against travelling to Mauritania, following the killing of four French citizens 24 December in the eastern part of Mauritania. The French government said it based its concerns on the threats of terrorist acts recently issued by radical Islamic groups in the
region. Security fears have already caused the cancellation of the 30th
edition of the Lisbon-Dakar Rally, since nearly half of the legs were
scheduled to be run in Mauritania.
