The Mozambican police have detained a South African tourist, Pierre Daniel Van Tonder, for a brutal assault against a 22-year-old mozambican in the tourist resort on Ponta do Ouro, in the far south of the country. The state-run news agency, AIM, quoted a local newspaper report as saying the incident happened on New Year’s Day in the Café Del Mar discotheque. It said the 32-year-old Van Tonder tried to jump the queue for the men’s bathroom, and when the young Mozambican whose name was not given in the report) protested, Van Tonder attacked him.Accompanied by three other South Africans, Van Tonder is accused of dragging the youth into the bathroom, where he beat him so severely that he broke his jaw in three places. The Mozambican victim was transferred immediately to Maputo Central Hospital, but the damage done to his face was so bad that he was then flown to a clinic in South Africa for surgery to reconstruct his shattered jaw. The police arrested Van Tonder, and he was taken to the southern city of Matola, where he is awaiting trial said Panapress.
