Nigerian Navy (NN) soldiers killed one suspected militant and arrested three others, following an encounter on the high seas, some 22 nautical miles off the coast of Rivers state in the oil producing Niger Delta region, a naval official said Monday. Naval Spokesman, Lt. Way Olabisi, told journalists the incident occurred Sunday evening, when the NN Ship NNS Kyanwar was patrolling along the Andoni River. He said the warship encountered suspected militants sailing in a speedboat and fired warning shots at them, adding that the militants fired back, resulting in an exchange that left one of them dead and three others arrested. There was no casualty on the side of the navy. Olabisi said the militants were among those who have been terrorising vessels along Andoni and Bonny Rivers. Militants operating in the region have recently stepped up their attacks against supply vessels, oil tankers and facilities, in what they said was a deliberate effort to stop the country’s oil export.
