Secretary to the government of Ogun state in Nigeria’s South-west, Olumayowa Olukoya, has died in a road accident that occurred Sunday along the Sagamu-Abeokuta road, the local press reported Monday.

The report said the Secretary’s police orderly also died in the crash, which left a Commissioner in the state injured.

The officials were returning from the burial of the father of Vice President Goodluck Jonathan in Bayelsa, in the country’s oil producing Niger Delta region, and were very close to their destination when the tragedy occurred.

Indications were that the vehicle in which the officials were travelling suffered a front tyre burst, which made the driver to lose control.

According to the Federal Road Safety Commission, some 400 Nigerians die in road accidents every month, a figure which experts describe as an under-estimation.

Over speeding, bad roads and poor maintenance of vehicles are believed to be the major causes of road crashes in the country.
