CAN 2008 fallout: Poor results land 8 Nigerian fans in hospital

At least eight members of the Nigerian supporters’ club have been hospitalised for shock-related illnesses after their darling team, Super Eagles, failed to score a single goal in 180 min utes of play at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana, according to the head of the country’s football supporters club, Rafiu Ladipo.

Ladipo told reporters here Monday that the supporters were ferried to the Cape Coast Hospital for treatment, and asked all Nigerians to pray for their quick re c overy.

“This is our worst appearance at any major international tournament because other countries always use Nigerian supporters as a parameter to judge their own, but now we are at sympathy of others who are wishing us to do well at the tournament by miracle, not by what we deserved,” he lamented.

The Nigerian football supporters club is perhaps the most vibrant in Africa, with members always visible in their green-white-green attire and distinguishable b y their non-stop drumming and dancing during matches involving the national teams.

The Super Eagles will be eliminated from the tournament unless they beat Benin in their last group match and Cote d’Ivoire beats Mali.
