No fewer than 37 people were killed following a two-day powerful tremor, caused by a strong earthquake, in the south western region of R w anda, near the border with Democratic Republic of Congo.
Governor of the region, Penelope Kantarama, who confirmed this to PANA here, said “hundreds of people have been seriously injured in the south western distric t of Rusizi”.
Few hours after Rwanda had been rocked by deadly quakes, many other people were killed in different localities of south Kivu in eastern Democratic Republic of C o ngo, a resident of Rusizi told PANA Sunday. “I cannot now establish the exact number of victims; we are still assessing th e real estimate of all damages,” Governor Kantarama added.
According to a reliable source, the earthquake that stroke till Monday morning in that part of east African valley rift was measured six on the open-ended Richter scale, and that natural disaster provoked panic among residents of the twin ci t ies of Kamembe (Rwanda) and Bukavu (eastern DRC). “Several after-shocks of lesser magnitude were still felt in the area after the larger quake,” the governor disclosed, adding that the disaster shook about 65 h o mes, while at least 89 people were displaced by panic in Rusizi and Nyamasheke d i stricts in the south western part of the country.
