Gunmen have abducted a former lecturer at the University of Port Harcourt, shortly before the wife of a businessman and politician based in the Nigerian oil city was freed after two days in captivity, the local press reported Saturday. Prof. Christian Anah, a former provost of the School of Medical Sciences at the university, was taken away from his residence at the Nkpolu/Rumuigbo area of the city Thursday evening. The latest abduction took place a day before the release of Seinye Lulu-Briggs, who was taken away from her residence Wednesday by over 50 gunmen, who killed one security guard and wounded four persons, including three policemen and her daughter. Some 340 people, including 11 children and five women, were abducted in the oil region in the past one year, with almost all of them later released unharmed.
