The UNDP and Nigeria’s oil state of Bayelsa were billed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Thursday for the Niger Delta Local Development Programme (LDP), the UN agency said. State Governor Timipre Sylva and the UNDP Resident Representative, Dr. Albéric Kacou, were scheduled to sign the MOU at a ceremony in the capital city of Abuja. The LDP is designed to support the development of effective, responsive and accountable local governance institutions capable of delivering public infrastructure and services using participatory, transparent and gender sensitive planning, monitoring and evaluation procedures. Lack of development in the oil region has triggered a range of militant and criminal activity, which has slashed oil production in Africa’s largest oil producer.
