Mauritania has reiterated its attachment to the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) as a strategic choice for political, economic and social integration of its member countries, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement issued here Sunday at the celebration of the 19th anniversary of the sub-regional organisation in Nouakchott. According to the ministry, the choice was informed by ”the common interests of Maghreb countries and the legal expectations of their peoples, who are bound by religion, language, geography and history”. “Today, achieving the supreme goals for which the AMU was established seems more than ever an imperative need, considering the huge challenges of globalisation and the era for groupings,” the ministry said. Established in 1989, the AMU groups Algeria, Libya, Morocco, Mauritania and Tunisia. Panapress.
