The governor of the Bubanza province, Pascal Nyabenda, said the assailants took away three Kalashnikov (guns) belonging to the victims. Pastor Habimana, spokesman for the PALIPEHUTU, has claimed responsibility for the attack, describing it as a “mere reflex of self-defence.” He claimed further that the policemen opened fire on a PALIPEHUTU/FNL patrol team, prompting an “immediate and vigorous” response from the elements of the patrol .
