The Banjul-based pan-african rights body, African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), is to send fact-finding missions to Kenya and Somalia “to investigate” alleged “serious human rights violations” in the two East African countries, the commission’s chairperson, Sanji Mmasenono, revealed in a press communique’ issued here Wednesday. This was part of the resolutions made at the end of fourth extraordinary session of the African commission recently held at the Corenthia Atlantic Hotel in Banjul. “The human rights situation in Kenya is a matter of concern to the African Commi ssion,” said Mmasenono. According to her, the rights body had issued a statement calling for restraint and exhorting both sides to the Kenyan conflict to resolve their differences through peaceful dialogue. She also urged the Kenyan government and its people to honour human rights oblig ations and duties as spelt out in the African charter. Mmasenono further observed that issues revolving around poverty, underdevelopment, disease and conflicts among others continued to pose challenges to “the promo t ion and protection of human rights in Africa”.
