The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights is to send fact-finding missions to Kenya and Somalia to investigate serious human rights violations that have taken place in the two countries. Justice Sanji Mamasenono Monageng, Chairperson of the Commission, said the decision was taken following discussions on the current human situation in Kenya and Somalia. Some 1,500 people have been killed in violent clashes following the declaration of President Mwai Kibaki as winner of last December’s election in Kenya. The violence turned tribal as people were hacked and burned to death in the East African nation. In a communiqué, she said the Commissioners deliberated on the rules of procedure of the Africa Court at the end of which the commission finalised some of the rules and decided to adjourn. Justice Monageng said issues of poverty, underdevelopment, disease and conflicts continued to pose challenges to the promotion and protection of human rights, especially in Africa. Panapress.
