Nigeria’s President Umaru Yar’Adua has promised that his country’s 140 million people will no longer suffer power outages by 2011. In addition, he said his administration would double the current power generation, estimated at below 3,000MW, within a year. President Yar’Adua made the promises while addressing a gathering of Chinese investors hosted by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Friday, as part of his visit to China. “By the year 2011, we hope to have overcome our power challenges so that we can successfully fast-track our economic growth. It is for this reason that we welcome the Chinese investors who want to partner with us on the use of coal as we explore all possible sources for additional power generation,” a statement released by the state house said. President Yar’Adua had pledge, during his electioneering campaign, to declare a power emergency upon assuming office, but the government has not kept the pledge. Panapress
