Egypt: 36 arrested ahead of polls

36 members of Egypt’s strongest opposition group, Muslim Brotherhood, were detained Monday ahead of next month’s elections. Arrests of members of the Muslim Brotherhood, totals over 230 in number since mid February. The Brotherhood which holds a fifth of the parliamentary seats seeks a non violent islamic nation through democracy. They have been banned from participating in politics and have therefore resorted to presenting their candidates as independents. In 2006, local elections were suspended for 2 years when the Botherhood did better than previously expected.
