Fourteen passengers died on the spot when a commercial bus rammed into a stationary truck along the Ilesa-Ibadan road in South-west Nigeria Tuesday, the private Punch newspaper reported Wednesday.
The accident happened when the driver of the bus, which was travelling from Osogbo (South-west) to the commercial city of Lagos, slept off behind the wheel.
Eyewitnesses said the high casualty was due to the fact that the vehicle was travelling at a top speed when the crash occurred.
Police and road safety officials led the rescue operation at the scene, using metal cutters to free mangled bodies from the wreckage.
Accidents are common on Nigeria’s poorly-maintained roads due to excessive speeding and other bad driving habits. Panapress
