The Niger government Thursday began paying the outstanding salaries for civil servants, the Economy and Finance Ministry said. According to a steering committee set up for that purpose, the operation also involves the actualisation of promotions that have been frozen since 1996, due to the country’s economic difficulties. The government had earlier released FCFA1.1 billion to pay the 5,915 beneficiaries, including 902 retired people. The exercise is the third of its kind since 17 September 2007. Panapress
