The Nigeria police have unveiled their latest unit, the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), saying it was set up in response to the global concerns about terrorism. The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mike Okiro, said at the ceremony here Monday that the squad, which has only 308 personnel so far, would help to create a more secured environment conducive for meaningful socio-economic development in the country. Though Nigeria has not experienced any international terrorist attack, Okiro said the country had been faced with ”the domestic form of terrorism”, in reference to numerous cases of violent criminal acts — sabotage, assassination, kidnapping, bank robberies and bomb explosions — committed across the country.
