Gambian President Yahya Jammeh has dropped the country’s Agriculture Secretary (Minister), Mr. Kanja Sanneh, state broadcast station, Gambia Radio and Television Services (GRTS) confirmed Tuesday. Quoting a press release issued from the Office of the President, GRTS announced that Mr. Sanneh’s sack was “with immediate effect” from Monday, 10 March, in line with constitutional powers conferred on the Gambian President. The press release, however, failed to advance any specific reason for the dropping of the minister, who served barely two years in office. According to GRTS, the President will henceforth oversee the agriculture ministry. Meanwhile, the ministry has been somewhat a hot-seat that has witnessed frequent firings and hirings of one Gambian after the other in the recent past. Many observers said the latest sack was connected to this year’s peanut trade season, which left many Gambian poor farmers unhappy. The government was said not to be able to put in place proper arrangements for gainful marketing of peanut farmers in the tiny West African country, whose economy depends heavily on agriculture.
