Security forces arrested some 113 illegal immigrants from sub-Saharan off Nouadhibou, 465 km north of the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott, between 9 and 12 March, local media reported Friday. Those arrested were attempting to cross into Europe through the Spanish archipelago of the Canaries from the Mauritanian coasts, according to the Mauritanian News Agency (AMI). They include nationals of Mali, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Guinea and Mauritania. Some 60 individuals were intercepted on the high seas while they were sailing from Nouakchott two weeks ago. Mauritania has recently become a transit country for the illegal immigration from sub-Saharan Africa to Europe, mostly through the Spanish Islands. Panapress.
